The telltale is that square backgammon board they brought with them to pass the time in tha Arizona desert. Of course it looks somewhat trickier than the earthly version, but you’d expect that, right?

With your hint — that it might be a copper mine — I went looking on Google Earth and it didn’t take too long to find it. It’s the Case Grande Copper Mine (32 57 17N 111 49 00 W) about 43 miles SSE of Phoenix, Arizona.

The squares are probably treatment ponds for the liquid used in the leaching process that removes the copper, or other metal, from the ore.
